Get Started
You do not need to launch a large program immediately. Begin with one or two boats, learn the building and sailing process, and expand as interest grows.
1. Choose Your Program
Decide whether MiniMax will be used for a classroom project, STEM club, after-school activity, summer program or model-yacht club outreach initiative.
2. Identify a Program Leader
Choose a teacher, club member or volunteer to coordinate the project. Previous sailing experience is helpful, but not required.
3. Start with a Demonstration Boat
Build one or two MiniMax boats first. This gives instructors and mentors an opportunity to understand the printing, assembly, electronics, rigging and sailing process before working with a larger group.
4. Determine Your Fleet Size
Decide whether students will build individual boats or work in teams. Teams of two to four students per boat usually provide a good balance of participation, cooperation and cost.
5. Secure the Files and Materials
Obtain the appropriate MiniMax license, download the official files and Build Guide, and gather the necessary printed parts, electronics, rigging materials, tools and adhesives.
6. Find a Place to Sail
Identify a safe, accessible location with calm water, such as a swimming pool, fountain or protected pond. Obtain any necessary permission before scheduling the activity.
7. Connect with a Local Club
An experienced model-yacht club can assist with building, sailing instruction, troubleshooting, course setup and race management.
8. Build, Test and Improve
Have students assemble their boats, test them on the water, diagnose problems and make adjustments. The troubleshooting process is an important part of the learning experience.
9. Finish with a Sailing Day or Regatta
Celebrate the project with a sailing demonstration, team competition or MiniMax regatta. Invite families, school administrators, sponsors and community partners to attend.
10. Share What You Learn
Document your program, share photographs and lessons learned, and help other schools and clubs develop their own MiniMax initiatives.
